I first started experimenting with vegan flavored butter when I made my sweet Whipped Maple Cinnamon Butter. That was so delicious on sweet Cinnamon Raisin Bread, that I realized savory bread, like my Olive Oil Herb Bread would be tasty with some flavored butter too!

This flavored vegan herb butter is so easy to make with just a few ingredients. It goes perfectly on savory bread and biscuits! Try it on grilled veggies and baked potatoes too – anywhere you need a savory buttery herbal taste.

The vegan butter

You’ll notice in the ingredients list and photo above that I’m using vegan butter. We are a vegan family and so happy that we have many vegan options available to us. If you are not vegan, then you use any butter you wish. BUT, please use salted butter or add in a quarter teaspoon of sea salt or more to taste.

Make sure that the vegan butter you use is one that you actually like the taste of. There are lots of companies out there with vegan butter of varying quality and taste. If you don’t like the flavor going into it, mixing a poor-quality vegan butter with herbs and seasonings isn’t going to improve the flavor.

I use vegan buttery sticks and have not tried this recipe with tub butter. If you do with success, please let me know.

the herbs

Only use fresh basil for this recipe. Dried basil just doesn’t have the same fresh and flavorful punch that fresh does. There are different flavors of fresh basil. I’ve only explored a few.

I am just using your basic sweet basil you can buy in the produce section of your grocery store for the recipe. I imagine that lemon basil or the lovely purple dark opal basil would be interesting to try. I’d love to hear what you have used! For more information on different varieties of fresh basil, read this informative article on Ten Varieties of Basil, by Hobby Farms.

I use sweet basil which is easily found at the grocery store in the produce section.

Garlic powder works better than fresh garlic for this savory whipped butter recipe. I have even tried finely minced garlic, and honestly, prefer garlic powder or granulated garlic.

How to make the easiest and tastiest flavored vegan butter

This is such an easy process. The most challenging thing for you to remember is to bring your butter to room temperature before whipping together.

Soften the butter

A little trick I use if I have forgotten – or if I have just decided to make whipped butter is to slice the vegan butter stick and then let it sit on the counter. Depending on the temperature of your kitchen, it shouldn’t take more than about ten minutes to soften enough to whip.

chop the fresh basil

A technique I learned for easily chopping fresh leaves like basil is the roll a few leaves together and then slice down the roll. You can then easily cut the slices crossways and have fresh chopped basil in no time.

Then you simply add your ingredients to a medium-sized bowl and whip until it’s light and fluffy!

I store my whipped butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator. I have used whipped butter two weeks after making it. If it separates a little in the fridge then just stir together before using.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup vegan butter sticks room temperature
  • 2 Tablespoons fresh basil chopped
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  • If your butter is taken straight out of the fridge then you will need to soften it to room temperature. Do not melt in the microwave. You can cut the butter stick into small pieces to hasten the softening process. This will take about 30 minutes.
  • Chop the fresh basil leaves into small pieces. You will need about 8-10 large leaves.
  • Using a medium bowl, beat the room temperature vegan butter together with the fresh basil and garlic till nice and smooth and fluffy.
  • This is better served right away. It will keep in the refrigerator but might separate. Simply stir together again.

Notes

A serving size is one-half tablespoon. I find that enough for lightly buttering a half piece of toast.  If your serving size is larger (which mine often is!)  then adjust the nutrition information accordingly.
